Chapter Ten
“Mamm,” Alfie called up the stairs. “Can we go outside with Dawdi?”
“Put a blanket around his legs,” Mamm called back.
Yesss! Now all they needed to do was get away from the house unseen, and if they got in trouble, they could honestly say Mamm had given them permission.
Mammi and Dat had gone to Walmart in Shawano, and Austin and Abraham were off doing whatever it was older boys did in their spare time. There would never be a better time to carry out their plan.
Dawdi was already in his wheelchair, because it was easier for Mamm to take him to the bathroom, even though he was pretty gute at walking two or three steps by himself. Alfie moved the rug by the front door so the wheels wouldn’t get caught on it, then grabbed one of Dawdi’s handlebars. Benji took the other one and together they pushed Dawdi’s wheelchair out the front door and onto the porch. Benji tucked the blanket around Dawdi’s legs. “Are you ready, Dawdi?”
Dawdi smiled and nodded his head, which meant “Let’s go!” At least that’s what Benji said it meant, and Benji understood Dawdi’s signals better than anyone else in the family.
Alfie had borrowed a big sheet of plywood from the barn. As fast as they could, they laid the wood over the top of the steps and wheeled Dawdi down the homemade ramp. He nearly fell out of the wheelchair when they hit a big bump at the bottom, but Benji grabbed Dawdi’s shoulder and pulled him back. “You okay, Dawdi?”
A low gurgle came from deep in Dawdi’s throat. Alfie glanced at Benji. Benji smiled. “He’s laughing. He likes it.”
Alfie didn’t know if that was really true, but now was not a good time to question Benji’s decoding skills. They’d gotten Dawdi down the steps. The hard part was over. Now all they had to do was push his wheelchair into the woods to Tintin’s hideout. Easy.
Alfie glanced back at the house as they pushed Dawdi around the side yard and across the lawn. Mamm probably wouldn’t come out to check on them anytime soon. When she got sewing, it was like she didn’t notice anything, not even the spider bite Alfie got from sleeping in the cellar last night. Abraham had to marry Emma soon or Alfie would probably be dead by July.
They got to the end of the grass, pushed past the hard dirt at the edge of the garden, and then nudged the wheelchair into the woods on the little path that led to Tintin’s house. Alfie pushed with all his might. Benji’s face was red. They’d made it about five feet into the trees when they had to stop to rest.
“It’s too hard,” Benji said, panting as if he’d just run all the way from Bienenstock. “I don’t think the wheelchair was built for going on a trip to the woods.”
Alfie would not accept defeat. Dawdi wanted to meet Tintin. They couldn’t disappoint him. “Go get the wagon, Benji. We can put Dawdi in the wagon and take him to the hideout.
